PE and Sport Premium

Background: The Primary PE and Sport Premium

In March 2013 the Government announced that it was to provide additional funding of £150 million per annum, for academic years 2013 to 2014 and 2014 to 2015, to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools in England - The Primary PE & Sport Premium. This funding, provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, is allocated to primary school headteachers. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

In the Autumn Statement 2013, the Chancellor, George Osbourne announced an additional year's £150m extended funding, taking the total investment to the end of the 2016 academic year. On 6th February 2014 the Prime Minister, David Cameron committed to continue the funding for the Primary PE & Sport Premium until 2020. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic it was announced on 17th June 2021 that Sports Premium would continue for the academic year 2021-2022. The funding has since been extended to 2022-2023, 2023-2024 and 2024-2025.

Basis of allocation

Schools receive the PE & Sport Premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6 (between the ages of 5 and 11). Children in Nursery and Reception are not included in the allocation.

Funding is calculated using data from the school census:

  • schools with 17 or more pupils receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil
  • schools with 16 or fewer pupils receive £1000 per pupil

Purpose of the funding

The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils,to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. Schools have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Provision in School

As a school we already provide high quality Physical Education and sport, and our intention is that this funding will further enhance the existing provision in school.

Reporting Outcomes

Updates relating to our provision for PE and sport will be provided throughout the school year through the school website.
